Two KS Bounty Hunters Arrested After High-Speed Chase

After a high-speed chase through Wichita, Kansas where speeds at times exceeded 100 mph, two bounty hunters were arrested. One bounty hunter was charged with aggravated kidnapping and carrying an unconcealed weapon while the other was charged with carrying a concealed weapon. John Roberts, the bail agent who had hired the bounty hunters who were arrested and participated in the chase as well, was trying to arrest a fugitive wanted on city and county warrants. The International Herald Tribune is reporting on the latest casualty of the financial crisis - the prison system. For decades, prison populations have been increasing, in large part due to minimum sentencing requirements, 3-strike laws, and harsh sentencing for non-violent drug offenders. Pasco County, FL Phasing Out Pretrial Services

Bob White, the sheriff of Pasco County, Florida, has recently announced that his county will be phasing out pretrial services due to budget constraints. As of the end of 2008, the pretrial services unit had been responsible for almost 700 defendants, with another 400 released on their own recognizance but without police supervision. HI Insurance Commissioner Revokes Bail Bondsman’s License

Monica Joyce Pacheco, a bail agent on the Big Island of Hawai`i, has been issued a cease and desist order from J.P. Schmidt, Hawai`i’s Insurance Commissioner after allegedly withholding premium payments and cash collateral for her own use. Pacheco had been operating an unlicensed and unregistered bail agency. Schmidt encourages those who feel they are not being treated in the proper manner by a Hawaiian bail agent to contact the Investigations Branch of the Hawai`i Insurance Division. Read More →
