CO Releases 10 Felons Early

Colorado, in an attempt to save $19 million in prison costs, has released their first 10 felons under the new early release plan. From the looks of things, the state may soon have to find another way to save $19 million. The first 10 prisonsers released, the cream of the crop from the eligible applicant pool, have been arrested on average 19.5 times a piece, including arrests for escape attempts and parole violation. 2,600 former inmates that are currently on parole will no longer be supervised to make room in the budget for the extensive supervision... NC Forced to Release Violent Offenders Early

After state courts decided that a decades-old law defined a life sentence as 80 years, dozens of violent offenders, including rapists and murderers, will be released from prison at the end of the month. Many of the defendants to be released have repeatedly been denied parole. Inmate Bobby Bowden, convicted of two murders in the 1970s and originally sentenced to death, argued that a law enacted in 1974 determined a life sentence was 80 years. A Wisconsin man found guilty of spitting in a police officer’s eye then head-butting a paramedic faces another charge - stealing the credit card of the woman who bailed him out of jail. John Thrasher allegedly stole the woman’s card before he took off for Alabama. The woman drove to Alabama to bring Thrasher back to Wisconsin. $100 Million Bail Highest in History?

Raj Rajaratnam, a billionaire hedgefund manager, was slapped with a $100 million bail by U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas Eaton. Rajaratnam, accused of a $20 million inside trading scheme, had to also turn his passports over to the court and is limited in travel to a 110-mile radius of New York City. Rajaratnam’s bail is secured with $20 million in property and cash. Rajaratnam could be facing serious jail time if found guilty of even one of the eleven charges brought against him. California Bail Bond Agents File Suit Against Orange County Sheriff

Appointed Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens is at the center of a federal lawsuit alleging “capping” in Orange County prisons, a practice where inmates refer (often through threats of violence) business from other inmates to certain bail agents who then give the original inmate a portion of the bail amount. The suit also includes former sheriff Michael Carona and ex-assistant sheriff George Jaramillo, as the scheme was alleged to begin under Carona’s time as sheriff as well. Mandatory Chemical Castration for Sex Offenders?

While France and several other European countries have chemical castration for sex offenders who agree to take the drugs to lower their sexual drives, France is considering mandatory chemical castration for pedophiles. Prisoner Walks Out of Custody After Guard Gives Directions

A New York prisoner dressed in a suit and tie simply walked out an open door into a courtroom on September 30. When the guard mistook him for an attorney, the inmate did not correct him, asking instead how to find the exit. With a few directions, Ronald Tackman walked out the front door to his freedom. Tackman is known to be a master of disguises. After bluffing his way to freedom, he stopped by his mother’s house (who assumed he was released from prison) to change clothes. Letterman Extortion Suspect has Bail Set

Robert Halderman, the man accused of attempting to extort late-night television personality David Letterman out of millions of dollars, had his bail set Friday, October 2 at $200,000 by Judge Michael Melkonian. Letterman’s attorney had initially asked for $500,ooo bail because of the threats Halderman allegedly poses to Letterman, while Halderman’s attorney initially asked for $100,000 bail due to his good community reputation and low flight risk.
