Alabama Agencies Accused of Hacking Sheriff’s Database

Three bail agencies in Mobile, Alabama are accused of hacking into the computer database at the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. According to deputy investigators, the three bail firms were using the computer system to obtain information about inmates to get a leg-up over competitors. Illinois County Trying to Recover Forfeited Bail Money

Kane County, Illinois (a state without private bail) is trying to recoup about $380,000 in bond money forfeitted by people who were arrested on traffic offenses then failed to appear in court. John Barsanti, Kane County’s state’s attorney general, admitted last week that there was no reason they hadn’t been actively trying to collect these debts in the past. Bizarre Fake Suicide Case in Florida

A 22 year old Florida man has turned himself into a bail bondsman after attempting to fake his own suicide shortly before the New Year. Christopher Rehbein, the fake jumper, had his girlfriend call the police and say he jumped off a bridge. The girlfriend was charged with filing a false report after several law enforcement agencies began to search for Rehbein. Rehbein, wanted for multiple felony charges, faked his own death because he was afraid to go to jail. Read More →

The Rocky Mount Telegram featured bail agent Stanley Griffin and restaurant owner Marcus Herring in a Christmas Day article. Griffin, better known as “Big Grif” of Big Grif Bail Bonds, teamed up with Herring to offer free turkey lunches on Christmas at Herring’s restaurant, Cuzo. In a recession, crime rates have been shown to increase. More crime leads to more arrests, which would logically lead one to think the bail business is booming. However, the tough economy is adversely affecting bail agents as well. It is hard for people to come up with the 10% to pay the bail agent, and harder to put up the collateral for the bond with the sagging housing market.
