NY Considering Charging Wealthy Convicts for Incarceration Costs

The New York state legislator introduced the “Madoff” bill Monday, July 20, 2009, that would require wealthy convicts to pay for the cost of their incarceration. The state of New York estimates that counties spend almost $1 billion a year to keep prisoners in jail. At $80 to $90 a day, they hope this bill will pass some of this cost along to wealthy convicts that can afford the fee.
