Bounty Hunters in South Carolina Work on Limited Time

In South Carolina, bounty hunters and bondsmen have 90 days to find fugitives who have skipped a court date. After this time, the bondsmen responsible for the bond need to pay the full amount of the bond. For this reason, immediately after a defendant skips a court date, recovery agents seek out the person, often by looking at last known addresses and asking family and friends of the defendant where the fugitive must be. SC Jail Releases Wrong Prisoner

A jail in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina released Richard Daniel Wines, an 18 year old white man, instead of his cellmate, a 34 year old black man named Jonathan Jermain Gardener after Wines pretended to be Gardener when Gardener’s name was called for release. Gardener was asleep when his name was called. Law enforcement officials are currently looking for Wines, who is now charged with perjury and escape from prison. Bondsman’s Tragic Death

This week brings sad news as the bail industry loses one of its own. Allen Mayfield, an Alabama bail agent, was found dead in his office on Sunday, January 11th from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Friends and family describe Mayfield as “a fun loving man who recently lost his faith.” Click here for funeral information or to send condolences to the Mayfield family.  Read More →
